Why is Air Duct Cleaning Important?

Proper duct cleaning and regular maintenance go a long way when it comes to providing the most efficient, cost-saving use of the HVAC system in your home or business. Not to mention eliminating the chances for serious health problems due to mold, dust, or other airborne allergens that are often spread throughout the structure. Our IICRC certified service technicians use the latest innovations in cleaning methods for our air duct cleaning services. This includes air scrubbing gear, mold and mildew removal, mitigation techniques, and air duct cleaning procedures.

We are proud to offer this as one of our many restoration services, and our experience and training allow us to be on the job promptly, much more thorough, and more efficient than most of our direct competitors in the field.Of course, you don’t have to wait for a disaster to strike to have your ducts cleaned. The National Duct Cleaning Association recommends a thorough duct cleaning at least every 4 years as this will keep the ducts free of dirt, dust, and other harmful elements. The single most obvious benefit of this regular maintenance will be improved functionality and expense-saving measures for your property, as well as increased health and general well-being for your loved ones and pets.

How Do Air Ducts Get Dirty?

According to the National Duct Cleaning Association:
“In addition to normal accumulations of dust and dirt found in all homes with air ducts, there are several other factors that can increase the need for regular HVAC system cleaning:

  • pets
  • occupants with allergies or asthma
  • cigarette or cigar smoke
  • water contamination or damage to the home or HVAC system
  • home renovation or remodeling projects

Some occupants are more sensitive to these contaminants than others. Allergy and asthma sufferers, as well as young children and the elderly tend to be more susceptible to the types of poor indoor air quality that air duct cleaning can help address.”

Natural Disasters Causing Poor Air Quality

In addition to the more common reasons listed above, there are many unforeseen circumstances which could cause your air duct systems to need cleaned immediately. Some of the biggest reasons being a natural disaster.

Fire Damage and Smoke.

In the aftermath of a fire, smoke and soot removal is necessary to restore duct work to proper operating condition. We can determine if the fire was centralized in the duct itself, or if it was in another location such as the blower motor or booster fan. Wall cavities are commonly used for return air ducts, along with ceilings in many commercial buildings. Fires in these locations can be very difficult to extinguish and far more difficult to repair and restore. At AFC Cleaning & Restoration, we carefully evaluate all steps that may be needed to mitigate and repair the damage caused by the fire. We then perform prompt and efficient removal of all foreign or dangerous materials in order to fully restore the duct system.

Flooding and Water Damage

Water damage can also wreak havoc on ductwork because mold ends up growing and presenting a number of serious health hazards. Has the water migrated throughout the ductwork, or penetrated to a point where electrical systems in the home are at risk? If the flooding is sewage based, then all porous surfaces will require specialized measures to clean.

In almost every case involving water damage, the ductwork will have to be accessed and visually inspected in order to determine if water has penetrated the system, and to what degree. It is then determined what areas can be repaired and what will need a full replacement. All excess water will have to be extracted from the ductwork through the use of pumps or dehumidifiers before any actual duct cleaning can begin.
